On February 27, 1973, in order to force the government to recognize the injustices against Indian people, AIM and other traditional Native Americans began an occupation of the town called Wounded Knee in South Dakota.

Their goal was not only to protest injustice, abuse and repression against their people, but also the government's violations of the many treaties between the Indian tribes and the United States government.

The U.S. government responded with a military-style assault.

Two brave Indians died during the 71-day siege, and more than 200,000 rounds of ammunition were fired by government forces at the Indian protesters.

This use of military force by the federal government was later ruled by a court to be illegal.

To bring an end to the siege, several government officials promised to hold government meetings, to review local conditions and the claims of treaty violations.

The siege ended, but the meetings never happened.
