The British Natural History Museum is planning an expedition to Paraguay, to "find several hundred new species of plants and insects".

But these species are only "new" to Western culture. Local aboriginal people are already well-aware of them, having coexisted for thousands of years.

When I was a child, we learned that Columbus "discovered" America. But how can you discover a place when people already live there?... unless you don't believe they are really people.

This expedition into the most remote parts of Paraguay also threatens the existence of the aboriginal people there, who remain isolated by choice. The researchers are sure to make contact with them, and they risk bringing germs which the aboriginal people may not be immuned to.

It is so tragic that some of the most educated people in Western society still believe they are "discovering" the new world, while totally disregarding the aboriginal people who were already there.
